Why it works
The omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in oily fish have some of the best evidence of any nutrient for supporting skin health and easing inflammation, which is exactly why fish oil appears in so many veterinary skin plans. Whole small fish deliver the same oils in food form.
Species choice matters: small, short-lived fish (sardines, sprats, herring) accumulate little mercury, while big predators (tuna, swordfish) sit at the top of the chain and should stay occasional. Raw fish adds parasite and bacterial risk plus thiaminase in some species, and cooked bones are a fine-boned hazard all their own.
Fish also appears on the recognised canine allergen list, so it is not automatically safe for a dog with existing sensitivities, and it belongs out of the bowl during elimination trials unless it is the chosen trial protein.
