Can Dogs Have Caffeine? No. Coffee, Tea and Energy Drinks Can Poison Dogs
No. Caffeine can overstimulate a dog's heart and nervous system. Coffee grounds and beans, tea bags, energy drinks, caffeine tablets, pre-workout powders and some medicines are much more concerning than a small lick from an empty cup.

Caffeine is a methylxanthine stimulant, closely related to theobromine in chocolate. Dogs are much more sensitive to it than people. A significant exposure can cause vomiting, agitation, a racing or irregular heartbeat, tremors and seizures.
The product and concentration matter. A lick of milky tea is not the same as swallowing coffee grounds, a tea bag or a caffeine tablet. Because labels and serving strengths vary, a vet should assess the actual product, amount and the dog's weight.
What to do if your dog has eaten coffee, tea or another caffeinated product
- Ring your vet promptly if your dog swallowed coffee grounds or beans, a tea bag, an energy drink, caffeine tablets or powder, or an amount you cannot confidently account for.
- Keep the packet and note the product strength, rough amount, time eaten and your dog's weight.
- Do not make your dog sick or give a home remedy unless a vet tells you to. Treatment depends on the product, dose and whether signs have started.
- Go straight to emergency care for tremors, collapse, seizures, marked agitation or a very fast heartbeat.

Is decaf safe?
Decaf contains much less caffeine, but it is not a useful drink for a dog and may contain milk, sweetener or flavourings. A tiny accidental lick is usually low risk; do not offer it deliberately.
